I was searching around for stuff on the web today and came across these really amazing pencil tests:

Gaston from Beauty and the Beast:

Animation By Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnson and Milt Kahl:

And this is just so amazing you must watch it! Its so neat to see the actual drawings that made up some of my favorite scenes and to also hear Andreas talk about it. I love how he says when he first looked at the drawings individually he thought "oh this looks simple, I can do this" and then he put all the drawings together as a move and was blown away. This is when he realized animation is about movement and one drawing leading to the next.

Claire de Lune

Claire de Lune has been a favorite for a long time! This is one of two coffeehouses I practically lived at in college. Good thing they have good drinks, smoothies and food! This one is located in North Park on University Ave. On the main floor there are mostly couches and lounge chairs. Perfect for visiting with friends or doing some sketching. They have a loft which over looks the place and it is really nice to kind of separate yourself from the traffic that goes in and out. There are plenty of outlets on the loft for laptops and lamps for drawing/reading. Sometimes you have to fight for the tables on the loft but other times they are usually open. Saturday nights they always have live music so it gets busy and loud. If you need to get work done I wouldn't recommend going on a Saturday night. BUT if you are looking to get some interesting character sketches you can't miss this place on a Sat night. I have seen everything from belly dancers to homeless guys playing drums on the tables. Never know what you will see at Claire's! Oh and all the people that work there are super friendly!

Old California Coffehouse
This coffeehouse came recommended by a couple of friends. Finally had a chance to go check it out! This one is located on San Marcos Blvd right in Restaurant Row. The environment is really comfortable, but I feel the seating is kind of limited if you go with more then 2 people. There is one section in the back that can seat 4-6 people, but other then that most of the tables are two seaters. I thought the outlets were scarce, but if you look up there are outlets high on the walls. Took us a while to figure that one out! If you go here for sketching or just lounging they do have a lot of outdoor seating. They have a lot of interesting espresso drinks that I haven't seen anywhere else. They also serve food, all I know is the quiche is pretty good! As for people watching/sketching it is mostly a family and high school crowd. If I wanted to draw kids, older people or sassy teenage girls, this would be a good place to go!

Reminiscing about Interning at Nick
Last night I was chatting with a past classmate and he was telling me about how he is enjoying his internship at Nickelodeon. It really made me reminisce and think back to the great times I had there. I also remembered about the blog we got going when I was there and a post that was about me and what I did there.
Here is a link to that post: http://www.frederatorblogs.com/post/845
And here is a character practice test I did while I was there for the X's:

Doing these character tests was a huge treat! It was so beneficial do to these and inspirational to meet with the artists and get feedback. Everyone was so nice and helpful and really wanted to see me succeed. I will have to dig up some more of the tests I did and post them. I will probably put them in my 'fine art' section though. So stay tuned!

First Look: DreamWorks Monsters vs Aliens
I am really excited about this movie! My current AM mentor, Dave Burgess, is head of character animation on this film and he is excited about it too. It is always a great sign when the people working on a film are excited as well. Means there is something for us to be excited about!
"Based on the horror comic book "Rex Havoc", the animated film is a throwback to "those B-movie glory days of the '50s when Martians invaded our backyards and rubber monsters stalked the Earth." The film turns those classic movies into an irreverent modern day action comedy about a monster hunter called upon to battle aliens who disrupt cable TV service..."

"...a modern-day California girl who has the bad luck to be hit by a meteor on her wedding day and grows to be 49 feet, 11½ inches tall (a wink at 1958's The Attack of the 50-Foot Woman)..."

The Other Side Coffeehouse
In college I used to go to coffeehouse's close to every night. Living in the suburbs of Carlsbad where everything closes at 8:30pm is really making me miss that life style. I don't need to go every night, but going to a coffeehouse to do work, draw, visit with friends, people watch, just get out of my element...is really nice every now and then! I have kind of stuck to my two favorite coffeehouses (The Living Room and Claire De Lune's) So I am on a mission to find more coffeehouses that are good for artists to work at.
Tonight I went to The Other Side with some friends. Unfortunately I was on my computer the whole time, so no sketches to post. Next time I will have to make a point to do even just a couple of people-watching-sketches.
Anyways, I this this coffeehouse is a really great place to go for artists! It is located in North Park (30th and Polk). Not so close for us North County folks, but if you are planing to spend the whole day down there or in the area, I would say its worth the drive. It is a pretty simple layout with plenty of tables to work at and outlets that line the room, which is great for people who work on laptops. One of the most frustrating things is going to a coffeehouse and not finding a place to plug in my laptop! The Other Side has a really laid back feeling, from the friendly workers to the people that go there. Since the walls are covered in art, it creates a very inspiring environment as well. The drinks are average price and aren't too sweet like some places make them. It also has patio seating and a pool table in the back if you want to take a break. Parking kind of sucks though.

Bar Basic Art Show

It has been SO long since I went to an art show. I was really excited to go to a show at a urban type bar called Bar Basic featuring artists from BottleRocket. It was really inspiring to see the art work, but even more so being around and talking to the artists. I really miss doing fine art, it's so therapeutic... and fun! I miss getting messy!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
He would be 104 today! Dr. Seuss has been one of my inspirations from a very young age and continues to be today. I have always been drawn to how different his books are. I assume this is the case for many people!
Last fall I went on a kayaking tour off the shores of La Jolla here in San Diego and the guide pointed out a white house that was right over the water on a cliff. He said it obviously was a great location but the person that lived there particularly picked that spot because it was right above where the leopard sharks primarily swam. So the man that used to live there would sit out on his deck and would be able to watch the sharks (along with the best view of the cliffs/ocean/sunsets). Then he said it was where Dr. Seuss lived! I about tipped over in my kayak! His son and family live there now. I had no idea he used to live in the area where I live now! I then looked around and it made sense where he got his inspiration.
